Sekku Crochet

I feel like we talk about headbands a lot or at least more than probably most normal people but, at least they are a popular hair accessory for this summer season.  We love them so much because we have short hair and Leslie seems to be wearing them more and more lately since she has started growing out her hair (for the hubby).  You really don’t need short hair to wear this cute little hair accessory.  In fact if you look at Noro’s model in the Noro the World of Nature Volume 27, you can see how good it looks on a long haired beauty.  It can also be worn around your neck as a short scarf, showing off all of the bright vivid colors we have all come to love from Noro.

Sekku Yarn

The light lace weight Sekku, a blend of 50% cotton, 17% wool, 17% nylon, and 16% silk is the perfect yarn for summer projects.  If you are interested in this project you can find it in Noro Volume 27 along with some other cute summer time projects.  We have the book and yarn in stock at L & B Yarn.  -B

Oooh! I may have to try this!

I am trying to get started on this scarf. Could you please help me with some problems I am having with it? I tried the crochet hook called for on the pattern (.6mm size 14) and it was way, way too tiny for the thread I thought. So I went up to a size 10 (1.3 mm) and that was so much better. This is my first time crocheting with thread this fine. Am I doing something wrong that I needed a bigger hook? What size hook did you use to make your scarf?

The second problem is that I think their is something wrong with the beginning row of their pattern. They start out with 1 dc into the 5th chain from the hook. After I got into the second row, I saw that the first hole/space created by the first dc is much, much smaller than any of the other spaces and just doesn’t look right. So I am thinking I should dc into more like the 9th or 13th chain at the beginning. Again, am I doing something wrong or am I missing something?

The third problem is that my scarf is coming out sort of narrow. Yours looks a little wider than my initial efforts and the scarf being worn by the model in the World of Nature book looks even wider than yours. There is just absolutely no way that they used a .6 mm (size 14) hook and managed to get that sort of width for the scarf!!!! Did they use a wider hook that is easier to work with and then tell us in the pattern to use a teeny tiny hook. I had to special order the stupid hook because I couldn’t find one anywhere in any store around here!

I am really feeling frustrated. I have begun this and then ripped it out twice already. I would so appreciate any advice you could give me or moral support or explanations of what you did as you made it. Thank you so much!

    Oops, there not their.

Also, I did think about it that if I dc into the 9th or 13th chain on the very first dc that I will have to add on the additional chains when I do my beginning chain cast on. (Thought you might worry I wouldn’t think about that.)

Sorry to write again. I forgot to say I am using Kirameki instead of Sekku. Is that why I needed a bigger hook? But if the Sekku is thinner and Noro used the .6mm as suggested on their pattern to make the scarf in their book, I really don’t understand how their scarf came out so wide. I am so confused.
